‘You can’t become world champions’

Former Pakistan cricketer Salman Butt didn’t go easy on the Pakistan players who made comments on the Afghanistan team, saying that they were motivated to win because of the situation in their country. He said that although he admits that the situation is not right one cannot win the World Championship because of this.

Afghanistan National Cricket Team was one of the top teams in the T20 World Cup 2024. They played a magnificent brand of cricket as they beat some big teams in New Zealand and Australia. The Rashid Khan-led side was stupendous with bat and ball and managed to reach the semi-final.

However, Afghanistan were blown away in the semi-final by the South Africa National Cricket Team. They got all out for a total 56 and had a torrid outing in the match. It was a disappointing end to what was a sensational campaign as to reach this far ahead of Australia, New Zealand was in itself a big thing.

After their sensational campaign, some fans and experts from Pakistan along with some current cricketers made a strong statement that caught the attention of many. They were of the opinion that Afghanistan was motivated to do well at the 2024 T20 World Cup due to the suffering the country has gone through.

Salman Butt, however, has lashed out at the Pakistan players for their comments, saying that if such is the case then how are Australia and India consistent. He while thrashing Afghanistan stated that they didn’t fight a war that people are praising them. Speaking in a video posted on his YouTube channel, he explained:

“What are the Pakistani players saying? They say Afghan players get motivated by being reminded of the conditions in their country. However, Australia have no such issues, so why do they win everything? India’s conditions are also good, but they are still very consistent.

“Did they fight a war to ensure their team plays well? It is fine to a point. I understand that they come from difficult conditions and are passionate about the game, but that’s about it. You cannot become world champions just on this basis.”

Winning two matches doesn’t mean that you have a complete team – Salman Butt in Afghanistan

Further lashing out at the Afghanistan team, Salman Butt said that they didn’t deserve to win the T20 World Cup 2024 because they didn’t have a complete team. He slammed people, saying the Rashid Khan-led side should’ve won the tournament by pointing out their poor batting lineup. He elaborated:

“I heard someone say that Afghanistan should have won. How will they win with just two batters? There’s nobody after their openers and people said they should win the World Cup. What’s this logic? Winning two matches doesn’t mean that you have a complete team.”

Salman Butt also didn’t go easy on Pakistan players for praising the Afghanistan team, saying that they should’ve focused on their mistakes. He added:

“Afghanistan have played magnificent cricket and have stuck together. But if Pakistan couldn’t do that, it’s their failure and not Afghanistan’s achievement. If Pakistan had done that, they surely would have won. You should speak about what went wrong for you, but you get everything else part from the real answer.”

Pakistan faced a group-stage exit in the T20 World Cup 2024. They faced losses against the United States of America and India and were eliminated from the group stage.
